PAST VEGAS CLASSIC CHAMPIONS
2007 - ARIZONA DESERT FIRE (AZDF)
2008 - ARIZONA DESERT FIRE (AZDF)
2009 - VEGAS CLASSIC (VC) COUGARS
2010 - VEGAS CLASSIC (VC) COUGARS
2011 - ARIZONA DESERT FIRE (AZDF)
We all witnessed ARIZONA DESERT FIRE (AZDF)'s
successful and well-balanced team in beating LA BALLERS, 46-30 in first round,
upsetting DEAF SPORTS ACADEMY (DSA), 44-38 in semi-final and beating NEW MEXICO
COUGARS, 66-63 in overtime with AZDF's Wally Reyes (No. #22)'s four (4)
3-pointer shots in second half to tie with NEW MEXICO COUGARS into overtime. It
capped ARIZONA DESERT FIRE (AZDF)'s third VEGAS CLASSIC Championship in its
history.
NEW MEXICO COUGARS' Robert Haney (No. #3) with 26
points and Sekoe White (No. #20) with 25 points carried NEW MEXICO COUGARS
admirably until tied in second half. They made a total of three (3) 3-pointers
in vain attempts.
We all think that three (3) teams, ARIZONA DESERT
FIRE (AZDF), DEAF SPORTS ACADEMY (DSA) and NEW MEXICO COUGARS from FAAD deserve
automatic berth in USADB Division I Tournament as they all are excellent top
teams from FAAD as well as our other three (3) teams from FAAD vying for NDBO
Tournament..
VEGAS CLASSIC Invitational Tournament was a
well-run tournament with deaf-run basketball officials headed by Jimmy Newsome
and Michael "Doc" Torres with David Hamilton, Ollie Palmer and Travis
Jokumsen as the basketball officials. Scorekeeping and timekeeping were
professionally handled by James Leek with Michael Gallagher, Dolores Pitzler,
Mark Quinones, and others. VEGAS CLASSIC's runner was competently handled by
Megan Nairne of Michigan
VEGAS CLASSIC was very hospitable to NEW MEXICO
COUGARS and DEAF SPORTS ACADEMY (DSA) by providing them with some complimentary
lodgings in Downtown Las Vegas at the Fitzeralds near the Chuck Minker Sport
Center.
VEGAS CLASSIC's mission is to provide and support
the Youth Basketball Camp for our Young Boys and Girls. The
gym rental was wholly sponsored by Paradise Sertoma of Las Vegas. Hand Waving
to the hard-working crew of Bonita and James Leek with their Vegas Classic
staff for its tourney success.
